Value Networks Identify Innovation

21st Century Pharmaceutical Research

To answer the clarion call for more innovation and productivity in Pharmaceutical research, Paul J. Edwards applied  the ValueNet Works methodology to the innovation story behind the new use of the drug Viagra®.  The innovation was triggered when the indication switched during Viagra® trials from an antihypertensive to the treatment for male erectile dysfunction. With the help of Dr. Nicolas K. Terret, co-inventor of the drug, Edwards traces the development path through the identification of participants or roles, tangible and intangible deliverables, and the analysis of their interactions. Insights into value drivers for the Pharmaceutical industry demonstate the applicability of the value network approach in pinpointing value inflection points that impact Pharmceutical innovation and productivity. Edwards concludes that the methodology hold promise in analysing other aspects of research.
