The Age of Network Intelligence

Mark Bolgiano, President and CEO, XBRL US will join and address your VN Cluster. The growth and capability of XBRL has been astonishing! As was widely anticipated, on May 14, 2008, the SEC mandated the biggest change to financial reporting since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Starting in early 2009, the largest public companies in the United States must submit financials using eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). All remaining public companies must submit by 2011. This surprisingly aggressive timeline means all public companies need to act quickly to tag their financial data from among the 15,000 available terms in the XBRL taxonomy of US GAAP.

Why is this SEC mandate so important to the value networks and VNA community? It because there exists concurrent activities to develop XBRL tags for intangibles, in addition to the routine GAAP tangibles. This is among the most important initiatives to financial reporting methods. Specifically, XBRL intangibles embedded in emergent networks are seen as a principal method to correct the corrupt financial reporting mess that led to stunning, widespread accounting scandals (like Enron) earlier in the decade.

For example, a thorough value network analysis of the 10K (annual report) and 10Q, including intangibles, could be a major mechanism to assure transparency, reliability, authenticity and authority of corporate financial reporting. VNA is especially important for the ‘network narrative’ portion of the 10K, otherwise known as the ‘Management Discussion and Analysis’ (MD&A).

Like the ‘SarBox’ compliance revolution, there are enormous deals in the XBRL space. It will drive billions in new business for expertise, applications, technologies and capabilities. Good to be aware and fluent in the details of this gigantic change.
